Lorry Mounted Crane/HIAB

Course Details

Lorry mounted crane training—often referred to as HIAB training—provides operators with the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a crane mounted on a vehicle for loading and unloading goods. These cranes are widely used in construction, logistics, and delivery operations for handling heavy or awkward loads.

A typical training course includes:

  • Familiarisation with the crane and controls – understanding the components, functions, and safe operation of the equipment
  • Pre-use and safety checks – inspecting the crane, vehicle, and lifting accessories before use
  • Safe operating procedures – including setting up the vehicle, deploying stabilisers, and operating the crane smoothly
  • Load handling and lifting techniques – attaching loads correctly, maintaining stability, and controlling movements
  • Understanding lifting principles – including safe working loads and the centre of gravity
  • Use of lifting accessories – such as slings, chains, and hooks
  • Site safety awareness – identifying hazards such as overhead power lines, uneven ground, and nearby personnel

Importance of Proper Training

1. Prevention of Accidents and Injuries
Improper use of a lorry mounted crane can result in serious incidents, including dropped loads, overturning, or contact with overhead hazards. Training helps minimise these risks.

2. Legal Compliance
Under legislation such as the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, employers must ensure that operators are trained and competent to use lifting equipment safely.

3. Safe and Controlled Lifting Operations
Understanding load limits, balance, and correct lifting techniques is essential to ensure safe handling of materials.

4. Protection of Equipment and Surroundings
Proper training reduces the likelihood of damage to the crane, vehicle, loads, and nearby structures.

5. Improved Efficiency and Professional Competence
Trained operators can carry out lifting tasks more accurately and confidently, improving overall productivity and safety standards.
