Course Details

Tail lift training (often referred to as tail lift or tailgate training) provides operators with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely use hydraulic lifting platforms fitted to the rear of vehicles. These lifts are commonly used in delivery, logistics, and transport operations to load and unload goods.

A typical training course includes:

  • Familiarisation with the equipment – understanding the components, controls, and types of tail lifts
  • Pre-use safety checks – inspecting the lift for defects, leaks, or damage before operation
  • Safe operating procedures – raising, lowering, and positioning the platform correctly
  • Load handling techniques – safely placing, securing, and balancing loads on the platform
  • Awareness of load limits – ensuring the safe working load is not exceeded
  • Workplace and environmental safety – recognising hazards such as uneven ground, traffic, and pedestrians
  • Basic maintenance and reporting – identifying faults and following correct reporting procedures

Importance of Proper Training

1. Prevention of Accidents and Injuries
Incorrect use of tail lifts can lead to serious incidents, including falls from height, trapped limbs, or falling loads. Training significantly reduces these risks.

2. Legal Compliance
Employers are required under legislation such as the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 to ensure that employees are properly trained in the use of work equipment.

3. Safe Load Handling
Training ensures that loads are positioned and secured correctly, maintaining stability during lifting and lowering.

4. Protection of Equipment and Goods
Proper use reduces the likelihood of damage to the lift, vehicle, and transported goods.

5. Improved Efficiency and Confidence
Trained operators can carry out loading and unloading tasks more efficiently and with greater confidence.
