Telehandler/Teleporter

Telehandler/Teleporter

A telehandler—also known as a telescopic handler—is a versatile piece of lifting equipment commonly used in construction, agriculture, and industrial settings. Training ensures that operators can use this machinery safely, efficiently, and in compliance with relevant regulations.

Telehandler training typically covers:

  • Machine familiarisation – understanding the controls, components, and capabilities of a telehandler
  • Pre-use inspections – checking for faults or defects before operation
  • Safe operating procedures – including starting, manoeuvring, lifting, and placing loads
  • Load management – understanding weight limits, load stability, and the use of load charts
  • Site safety awareness – recognising hazards such as uneven ground, overhead obstructions, and nearby personnel
  • Use of attachments – such as forks, buckets, or lifting jibs, depending on the task

Importance of Proper Training

1. Prevention of Accidents and Injuries
Operating a telehandler without proper training can lead to serious incidents, including tipping, collisions, or dropped loads. Training helps reduce these risks significantly.

2. Legal Compliance
Employers must ensure that all operators are properly trained and competent under legislation such as the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005. Certification demonstrates that this requirement has been met.

3. Safe Load Handling
Telehandlers are powerful machines, and incorrect use—especially when lifting at height or on uneven terrain—can result in instability. Training ensures operators understand load limits and safe working practices.

4. Protection of Equipment and Property
Proper use reduces the likelihood of damage to the machine, materials, and surrounding structures, helping to avoid costly repairs and downtime.

5. Improved Efficiency and Productivity
A trained operator can carry out tasks more accurately and confidently, contributing to smoother operations on site.
