Harness Training

Harness training, often referred to as working at height or fall protection training, provides individuals with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely use safety harnesses and associated equipment when working at elevated levels. It is essential in industries such as construction, roofing, telecommunications, and maintenance.

A typical training course includes:

  • Understanding working at height risks – including the causes and consequences of falls
  • Types of harnesses and equipment – such as full body harnesses, lanyards, connectors, and anchor points
  • Correct fitting and adjustment – ensuring the harness is worn securely and comfortably
  • Inspection procedures – checking harnesses and equipment for wear, damage, or defects before use
  • Safe use of fall protection systems – including fall arrest and restraint systems
  • Awareness of fall forces – understanding the impact of a fall on the body, including concepts such as gravitational force
  • Emergency procedures – including rescue planning and suspension trauma awareness

Importance of Proper Training

1. Prevention of Falls and Serious Injuries
Falls from height are one of the leading causes of workplace fatalities. Proper training significantly reduces the risk of accidents.

2. Legal Compliance
Employers must comply with legislation such as the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, which requires safe systems of work and appropriate training for employees working at height.

3. Correct Use of Equipment
Improper use of harnesses or anchor points can render fall protection ineffective. Training ensures equipment is used correctly and safely.

4. Increased Awareness and Risk Management
Training helps individuals identify hazards and assess risks before starting work at height.

5. Preparedness for Emergencies
Knowing how to respond in the event of a fall, including rescue procedures, can prevent further injury or complications.
